The Chinese New Year in 2012 actually begins on January 23. Unlike Western calendars, the Chinese calendar is calculated yearly based on lunar and solar cycles, so the New Year falls on a different date each year. Every year is then assigned a representational animal from a repeating cycle of 12 animals. For instance, 2011 was the year of the Rabbit. People born in this year are said to be talented, reserved, and kind.
2012 is the year of the Dragon. In China, the Dragon is a mythological symbol of power and mystery. People born in years of the Dragon are said to be characterized by ambition, dominance, risk-taking, success, self-sufficiency, good health, creative careers, and committed relationships. Dragon years are thought to be years of good fortune and plentiful blessings.
